About Us

Martha's Way was established in 2019 by President/CEO Tanya Bland, MSW whom was inspired by her mother Martha Dickson's hard work in supporting and advocating for individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families in the state of New York for over 30 years. 

Martha who retired in 1996 from Letchworth Village which began as a residential institution located in Rockland County, New York, in the hamlet of Thiells built for the physically and mentally disabled of all ages, from newborns to the elderly.  It was named after Pryor Letchworth who supported reform in the treatment and care of the insane, epileptics, and poor children. Martha was at the forefront of advocating for these individuals to be able to transition from living in an institution to living in their own communities. Most importantly, Martha advocated for the rights of individuals to be treated with dignity and respect. 

"Martha even at the tender age of 90 and Tanya continues to advocate every day for a system that provides supports and services to individuals with disabilities that are respectful and humane to all it serves." Martha passed away March 19, 2023.

We will continue to do the work that Martha set out to do 30 years ago which was to support individuals with developmental disabilities to achieve greater independence and function at their highest potential. We are dedicated to improving the lives of individuals who are vulnerable and underserved. We strive to provide individuals with the support needed knowing that individuals are better equipped when anchored in a cohesive support system. We believe individuals have a right to choose their own destiny. We also believe that individuals should have access to meaningful employment and the right to quality care.
